Kraken Coffeehouse Mural Contest

The Currituck County Arts Council (CCAC), in collaboration with The Kraken Coffeehouse (Camden location), invites talented local artists to participate in a mural contest to transform the front and left sides of their Camden building. This mural will feature waves rising up to 5-8 feet, with Kraken tentacles emerging, creating a highly visible and unique opportunity to showcase your artistic vision in the heart of our community.

Entry Requirements:

Eligibility:

  • Entrants must be at least 18 years of age and a current resident of one of the following counties: Currituck, Chowan, Hertford, Bertie, Tyrrell, Pasquotank, Dare, Perquimans, Camden, or Northampton.

  • This opportunity is open to everyone in the community—no professional art or mural experience required! Whether you're an aspiring artist or simply passionate about expressing yourself creatively, we would love for you to share your talent and get involved.

Submission Deadline:

  • All entries must be received by 12:00 AM on December 6, 2024.

  • Late submissions will not be considered.

  • Entries that are plagiarized, contain offensive material, or do not adhere to the submission guidelines will be disqualified.

Submission Guidelines:

Design Specifications:

  • Entries must be original works of art created by the entrant.

  • The design should reflect the correct proportions for a mural that is 3 to 8 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

Accepted Submission Formats:

  • Painted canvas

  • Colored digital artwork

  • Colored drawings or sketches

File Specifications:

  • File Size: Each submission must be no larger than 5 MB.

  • File Format: Please submit your artwork in JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), or PDF (.pdf) format.

  • Dimensions: The image should be at least 2000 pixels on the longest side for clarity.

Additional Materials: Please include the following with your submission:

  1. Proof of residence (to confirm eligibility)

  2. A list of all supplies required to execute your design. (Note: All materials will be provided by The Kraken Coffeehouse.)

  3. A portfolio showcasing previous large-scale artworks or murals.

  4. At least one client reference.

  5. A resume detailing your art experience.

Resume Submission:

  • File Format: Submit your resume in PDF (.pdf) or Microsoft Word (.docx) format.

  • File Size: Keep your resume file size under 2 MB.

  • File Name: Use a professional file name, such as FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf.

Prize and Recognition:

Judging Criteria: Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity: Originality and innovation in design, capturing the essence of the Kraken and the local community.

  • Technical Skill: Artistic quality, including color use, composition, and attention to detail.

  • Theme Adherence: The mural’s reflection of the wave and Kraken tentacle theme, and how well it fits within the mural space.

  • Feasibility: The practicality of executing the design within the size and structural limitations of the mural space.

The judges' decisions are final. The winner will be announced at the CCAC member meeting on December 13, 2024, at The Kraken Coffeehouse.

Award for the Winning Artist:

  • $1,650 upon completion of the mural.

  • A dedicated team to assist with mural creation.

Mural Timeline:

  • Contest Submission Deadline: All entries must be submitted by 12:00 AM on December 6, 2024.

  • Winner Announcement: The winning artist will be announced on December 13, 2024 at the CCAC member meeting.

  • Mural Creation Timeline: The mural project is expected to begin in early January 2025. The artist must complete the mural by February 1, 2025.

    • Exact start dates will be confirmed with the winning artist based on availability, weather conditions, and other factors.

    • The Kraken Coffeehouse will work closely with the winning artist to ensure all materials and support are available.

Mural Creation & Reveal Party:

  • Community “Paint Party”: Once the mural begins, The Kraken Coffeehouse will host a community “paint party” to kick off the project.

  • Mural Reveal Celebration: A reveal celebration will take place upon the mural's completion. A portion of the sales from this event will be donated to flood relief efforts in Northern North Carolina.

Copyright and Ownership:

  • By submitting an entry, participants affirm that the artwork is their original creation and that they hold the copyright.

  • The Kraken Coffeehouse and Currituck County Arts Council retain the right to use the artwork for promotional purposes, including but not limited to social media, websites, and exhibitions, with proper credit given to the artist.

Liability Release:

By entering the contest, participants agree to release The Kraken Coffeehouse and Currituck County Arts Council from any liability arising from the use of their artwork in connection with the contest or any promotional activities.

Changes or Cancellations:

The Kraken Coffeehouse and Currituck County Arts Council reserve the right to cancel, terminate, or modify the contest in the event of unforeseen circumstances or technical issues.

Indemnity:

By entering the contest, participants agree to indemnify and hold harmless The Kraken Coffeehouse and Currituck County Arts Council, along with their affiliates and employees, from any claims, damages, or liabilities resulting from their participation in the contest.

Force Majeure Clause:

In the event of unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to acts of nature, government restrictions, or other events beyond the control of The Kraken Coffeehouse or the Currituck County Arts Council, the contest may be postponed, rescheduled, or canceled. Artists will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.

Agreement to Terms:

By submitting an entry, participants acknowledge and agree to abide by the official rules and terms of the contest.
